Ammonium Sulphate

Product Description

Analysis:  21-0-0-24S available in slightly varying analyses

Often abbreviated AS or AMS, Ammonium Sulphate is produced from a reaction of sulfuric acid and heated ammonia. AS is often a byproduct of other manufacturing processes, such as production of steel and nylon. Historically AS was one of the first and most commonly used dry fertilizer products, however it is currently not used as extensively since its N content is not as high as in other products like Urea and Ammonia. It is, however, still valued for S content and as a readily-available form of N.

Properties:

  • Crystalline and granular form in a variety of sizes (SGN)
  • Highly water soluble
  • White to beige in colour; sometimes translucent
  • Premium granular product is harder, which allows it to blend and flow better; low grade crystalline product breaks down more readily

Advantages:

  • Valued for S content and readily-available form of nitrogen

Drawbacks:

  • Product should not be stored for extended periods of time; otherwise, there is a risk of degradation
  • Nitrogen content is not as high as rival products, such as Urea, Anhydrous Ammonia and UAN
